Prepare to be SHOCKED.
by nicolaou inrecent posts have encouraged us all to be more tolerant of others beliefs whether those are religious, atheist or anything in the middle.
fair enough.
still, that doesn't mean i'm going to go easy on all you believers, yes even you jw lurkers who are reading this.. .

Nic,
Shock is one thing, insulting is another. Saying, do you realize there is evidence to support the opposite of XYZ which is what you claim to believe can be shocking to someone who believes in XYZ, but it can jumpstart their thinking. Saying only a morally and intellectually bankrupt baboon with shyte for brains would believe something as ridiculous as XYZ is insulting and I personally don't think it does much good.
Shock 'em, don't knock' em.

Of Late Many Here Seem To Be Preaching Aethiesm..
by Qcmbr inwhen i first came here a while back there was plenty of discussion around and about jw topics and general chit chat but of late i've felt quite a sharp increase in posts that are: .
1/ preaching aethism (as opposed to putting it forward in a respectful way as an alternate viewpoint.
2/ vitriolic attacks on those who dare have another view ('damn those stupid heretical believers') .

Could it be that some people are just really sensitive when it comes to logically defending a very emotionally charged subject like a belief system?
Scully,
I think alot of times what you said is the problem, people paint themselves into a corner from a logical/debate standpoint and the shouting begins. But there are times that I think there is something else at work.
People always claim that believers get upset because their beliefs are being attacked with unassailable logic etc, and as I said above that is often the case, however there are times when I think believers are upset because of what they percieve to be extreme disrespect. If they are believers and truly love their object of worship/belief system they are none the too happy to hear someone deride, sneer at, launch profanity at, etc. their object of worship/belief system. It upsets them because something the cherish is being disrespected, the analogy would be I guess someone launching a vicious verbal attack on a loved one in your family. Logic has nothing to do with that, its about respect, someone calling your mother for instance all sorts of deplorable things will often incite people to violence, much less shouting. Its one thing to say that you don't think very much of one's mother, its quite another to call her a lazy whore.
Faith and beliefs aren't about logic, just like love for a family member isn't about logic, it just is. So there are times that I think that is what is upsetting to people that love God, Jesus, whatever, they feel like, you don't want to believe in, worship them, fine, but don't disrespect them to a believer.
Also, just my 2 cents.

The first rule of Fight Club, is that you don't talk about Fight Club.

TYLER
Listen to me. You have to consider
the possibility that God doesn't like
you, he never wanted you. In all
probability, He hates you. This is
not the worst thing that can happen...
JACK
It isn't... ?
TYLER
We don't need him...
JACK
We don't... ?F@&k damnation. F!*k redemption. We are God's unwanted children, with no special place and no special attention, and so be it.

Born ins...how far did you go?
by wanderlustguy inhow far from where you grew up do you live now?
did you leave to get away or to take ownership of your life and create a new destiny?
did you leave before or after you figured it out?.

WLG,
I stayed put geographically, I did however spend 9 years in school and started using my middle name instead of my first name to "reinvent" myself and distance myself from how I was raised.

At the rock hall of fame there was an interesting display involving S&G, its seems the CIA requested permission to use "The Sound of Silence" as a motto and theme song within the agency. They had the actual letter from the CIA making the request on display. How cool was that?

evolution in the bible, says vaticanfrom: by martin penner.
november 07, 2005 the vatican has issued a stout defence of charles darwin, voicing strong criticism of christian fundamentalists who reject his theory of evolution and interpret the biblical account of creation literally.

Tetra,
But if that was the case, you'd have to admit God was a hell of a programmer.

Rex,
I don't think God and evolution are incompatable, isn't it possible that God used evolution as his means of creation, rather than just presto, everything popped into existence as is?

So just WHO made this universe?
by onacruse inin the christian theology, "god" is the creator.
but many scriptures intimate that jesus was, at the very least, the "maker.
" there are 2 distinctly different greek words used in the bible to describe the activities of these two beings; a distinction that the wts (along with many other non-trinitological belief systems) has made.. i'd rather not argue about the meaning of these two words, as they are very clear, and hardly worth (imho) wasting the bandwidth on yet further etymological dissertations.. i recently suggested that i could see jesus as tinkering with dna, and god giving him helpful suggestions along the way.

Okay, I'm not trying to be obtuse, but again I ask, popped out of the potential? What is that? Or if this universe is one partical in a larger one my question stands, why is there anything rather than nothing, this "stuff" for want of a better word had to come from somewhere, or not? Does it make sense to say that everything just always was?
